Optimism prevailed among the delegates of a major women’s rights conference Thursday, though campaigners warned that despite recent progress, Lebanon is a long way from achieving gender equality.

“Today we are on the verge of a silent revolution,” President of the National Commission for Lebanese Women Claudine Aoun Roukoz told a packed assembly hall.

The conference, titled “The impact of political, economic and social changes on the reality of Arab women” and organized by U.N. Women, brought together representatives of women’s rights organizations from across the region.
