Beirut, 26 June 2019 (United Nations Information Centre in Beirut) - The "Karama Beirut Human Rights Film Festival" fourth edition kicks off at 7 PM on 1 July 2019, at Metropolis, Empire Sofil cinemas. The festival, organized by NGO “Art Factory 961” under the theme “Talk to Her” is held this year in cooperation with the United Nations Information Centre in Beirut (UNIC Beirut) with the support of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the regional office for the Middle East and North Africa (OHCHR-MENA), the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the embassies of Switzerland and the Czech Republic in Lebanon.
The festival runs from 1 to 5 July 2019 at Metropolis Empire Sofil, and features 24 films from Lebanon, the Arab World, Europe, America, and Asia, including 7 long documentaries, 4 short documentaries, 3 long features, 4 short feature films and 6 Animation films, followed respectively by Q&A sessions with 17 regional and international film directors. The programme also features a major panel discussion addressing the law of personal status and its negative effects on women in Lebanon.
Karama Beirut Human Rights Film Festival (KBHRFF) is a film event that contributes, among other well-established and renowned human rights film festivals in the world, to spreading a cinema that denounces racism, hate discourse, discrimination and injustice. The 1st edition of KBHRFF was held in 2016 under the theme “The Others,” and aimed to raise awareness on the rights of refugees and minorities in Lebanon and the Arab World, while the 2nd edition in 2017 addressed the theme “New Identities” and focused on new identities conflict. The 3rd edition in 2018 aimed to support freedom of expression.
The current 4th edition falls under the framework of the Sustainable Development Goal 5 on ‘Gender Equality’. Equality between women and men is not only a fundamental human right but a necessary foundation for a world of peace, prosperity and sustainability.
