President Michel Aoun Wednesday called for the extension of UNIFIL’s mandate, a little over a month until the deadline to renew it. Aoun has asked for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon’s term to be renewed without modification to its budget or the scope of its work in order to sustain its role of maintaining stability in the south. Despite daily Israeli incursions on Lebanese land, sea and air sovereignty, the southern border of Lebanon remains one of the calmest in the region.

The extension was brought up during a meeting between the president and Acting U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Pernille Kardel. The meeting came ahead of her trip to New York to meet with the U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, where she will present the situation in Lebanon and the implementation of Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war with Israel.
