UN Marks 70th Anniversary of Universal Declaration of Human Rights at Beirut Arab University

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), in collaboration with the United Nations Information Centre in Beirut (UNIC Beirut) and Beirut Arab University (BAU), will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and celebrate the Human Rights Day falling on 10 December, in a special ceremony entitled, “A Defender for a Right” on Wednesday 12 December, at Gamal Abdel Nasser Hall - BAU, Tarik El Jadida, Beirut.

The opening ceremony, which starts at 10:00 am, will feature statements by Minister of State for Human Rights Ayman Choucair, MP and Head of the Parliamentary Committee for Human Rights Michel Moussa, Regional Representative of OHCHR Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA) Roueida El Hage, and President of Beirut Arab University Amr Galal El-Adawi.

It will also include the screening of two video messages by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and UN Under-Secretary-General for Human Rights Andrew Gilmour.

OHCHR Regional Representative Roueida El Hage will moderate an interactive discussion on “Promoting Positive Messages” tackling the role of social media and arts in combating hate speech. The discussion will engage BAU Secretary General Omar Houri, writer and journalist Zahi Wehbi, human rights expert Habib Belkoush and human rights activists Mirvat Rishmawi and Joumana Merhi.

Enclosed is the invitation along with the agenda of the meeting.

The UN Information Centre in Beirut kindly urges media institutions to grant the event the coverage needed given the overriding importance of “hate speech” at the national and international levels and from different aspects.
