UN launches World Migration Film Festival in Beirut

In parallel with the third edition of the World Migration Film Festival, which runs from 28 November to 18 December 2018, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Lebanon, in cooperation with the UN Information Center in Beirut (UNIC Beirut), is organizing a film festival on Monday 17 December, starting from 5:30 pm, at Cinema City, Beirut Souks-downtown.

The film festival begins with a welcome speech by the United Nations and features three films followed by discussions, as follows:

-           On the Same Boat (71 minutes)

This documentary explores the human faces of the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean, telling the personal stories behind the news articles we read about their perilous trips, which sometimes ended in tragedy.

  • Point of view (24 minutes)

This short movie reflects various perspectives on vital issues that affect our daily lives, giving the opportunity to test familiar concepts in a different way.

  • Mohamed, the First Name (14 minutes)

This short movie tells the story of Mohammed, who faced significant challenges in France for eight years because of his common name in the world. The movie sheds light on stereotypes and prejudices in western societies in a comic and amusing way.

Enclosed is the invitation to the Film Festival.

Lebanese Director Elie F. Habib will take part in the discussions that will follow the screening of the movies.

UNIC Beirut and IOM kindly urge media institutions to grant the event the coverage needed given the importance of the movies, which highlight a crucial humanitarian issue through personal and real experiences.
